Why Nila ?

Nila means Indigo in Bahasa Indonesia. There is a strong tradition of IKAT weaving in East Sumba. A local specificity is the natural dye made from plants. One of the traditional colour is the indigo. For this reason, and also because this beautiful colour echoes the blue of the sky and sea, we chose the name “Nila Resort”.



Our offer

The rate for one night at the Nila Resort will be between 250 and 350 US$. Full board options will be available.

Our objective is to demonstrate that tourism can be compatible with the environment and local tradition. This is a place where guests can disconnect from their daily lives, away from the hussle of big cities. Lush nature and white sandy beaches will make you forget your calendar and watch. Our SPA services and Yoga classes will help you get rid of all stress. If you are up for more adventure, Sumba offers many chances to enjoy mesmerizing landscapes and an atypical culture.

The resort will include a dozen bungalows and is designed to offer visitors premium services and maximal comfort.

The restaurant, located in the center of the resort will serve a fusion cuisine mixing French and Indonesian food cultures. Fresh, locally grown products will be at the center of every preparation, which will help preserve and promote the island’s resources.

BUILDINGS AND BAMBOO CHALLENGES

In order to create low-impact constructions that match the architectural culture of the island, we decided to use bamboo as the primary building material.

We are thrilled to have the famous Balinese architecture firm IBUKU working with us on this objective. This is an extraordinary partner for us, as IBUKU have gained a well-deserved international reputation when it comes to bamboo-building. Their constructions, which combine luxury and sustainability, will give our resort a very unique style.

They also happen to know Sumba inside-out and upside-down which is a great asset.

A LOCAL FOOTHOLD

We want local populations to feel involved of their island’s development.

Thanks to a hospitality and hotel school that opened its doors on Sumba in July 2015 (the Sumba Hospitality Foundation), we will be able to rely on locally trained staff members.

We will also encourage the Sumbanese to offer complementary activities to tourists such as horseback riding, motorcycle rentals, scuba diving… The Resort is committed in helping them start businesses by providing seed loans, advice and of course recommendations to its guests.

ROAD MAP

We became owner of the land where the Nila will be built already over a year ago.

Our Indonesian company is incorporated with the help of a Balinese notary, and the building permit was obtained in November 2017.

Once we have reached our funding goal, we will launch constructions in beginning of 2019, and our estimated delivery date would be in the Summer 2019.

Many challenges await us until then, but thankfully we are a strong and motivated group of people with different backgrounds and skills, and we can rely on amazing partners. Thanks to all these wonderful people, nothing will stop Nila Resort’s bamboo doors to open.

WHY NILA ?

“Nila” means Indigo in Bahasa Indonesia.
